‘Pirates gave me a R15 million contract and I left Chiefs’ – ex-Amakhosi star
Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo has revealed why he made a blockbuster transfer to Orlando Pirates in 2018.
The 34-year-old former keeper performed over 30 matches for Amakhosi, successful two league titles in 2013 and 2015. During his time at Naturena, he was typically enjoying second fiddle to Itumeleng Khune, who was a longtime primary on the time.
In 2018, Khuzwayo left Chiefs for Pirates however sadly for him, he by no means had an opportunity to signify the Buccaneers as he was pressured to retire in 2019 as a result of an ankle harm.
Speaking on the SoccerBeat podcast, the retired keeper revealed why he jumped ship.
“I spoke to Dr Irvin Khoza a year before my contract ended [at Chiefs] and then called Bobby [Motaung]. He [Bobby]gave me a new contract, and I told him I’m not going sign it,” Khuzwayo stated.
Khuzwayo left Chiefs for Pirates however didn’t inform Amakhosi administration
“Bobby told me that I must tell Dr Kaizer Motaung that I’m not going sign the contract; I called the meeting with Bobby, Dr Motaung, and the head coach then was Steve Komphela. They asked me where I was going, but I couldn’t say,” Khuzwayo added.
“I signed a contract with Pirates in October before my contract entered the last six months,” the ex-Chiefs keeper revealed. “It was a three-year contract, however the day I went to signal, Dr Irvin Khoza known as me and stated I have to come to the workplace.
“So I went to the office, and he just gave me a five-year contract. The contract changed from the salary that I was going to get; I was happy to get the contract because the money went up.”
Before leaving Chiefs, Khuzwayo stated the contract Pirates initially supplied implied he was going to be their first-choice keeper.
“Initially, the contract stated that I was going to be the number [keeper] for Pirates, and it had everything. I think the contract was R15 million in total for five years,” he stated.
