Chakwera needs thriving aquaculture sector

He stated this in Mzuzu on Friday, when he presided over the official commissioning of a K525 million Mzuzu Fish Feed Mill.
Chakwera stated by maximising fish feed manufacturing via the manufacturing facility, the nation can higher assist it’s fisheries sector.
“Government needs to make sure a sturdy and resilient fisheries trade that would meet each native demand and contribute to financial development within the nation.
“By focusing our efforts and resources on growing local fish production, we can develop a thriving sector that provides an alternative protein source to enhance food security,” Chakwera stated.
Vice President Michael Usi, who can be Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change thanked African Development Bank for financing institution of the fish feed mill.
He stated, along with different stakeholders together with improvement companions, the nation can rework aquatic meals techniques into vibrant, sustainable engines for financial development, improved vitamin and environmental resilience.
Director of Fisheries for Mzuzu, Felix Zidana stated the nation has been having low fish manufacturing due to poor high quality fish feed that has been produced within the nation over time.
“Our fish farmers have been struggling to find fish feed as production was not taking place in the country. This was forcing them to source the feed from Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania and South Africa, which was draining forex,” he stated.
He stated the mill has capability to supply 9,600 metric tons per 12 months. He nonetheless stated the amount remains to be small when in comparison with the nation’s fish feed demand of 200,000 metric tons per 12 months.
