Co-organized by the State of Kuwait, the Republic of Tajikistan and the United Nations Office of Counterterrorism (UNOCT), the convention geared toward selling regional and worldwide cooperation on numerous border safety and administration points outlined within the eighth evaluation decision of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy adopted by the General Assembly in July 2023.
Speaking on the ministerial session on the way to “leverage Multilateralism to Achieve Enhanced Counter-Terrorism Cooperation around the World”, the Special Representative Simão underscored that attributable to geopolitical causes, the Sahel has turn into a forgotten area, compared to different conflict-affected areas of the world, though it’s now characterised because the terrorism hotspot of the world. “If the Sahel countries do not receive enough support to fight and defeat terrorism, there is the risk that some parts of this Region will become safe sanctuaries from where terrorists can plan attacks on other countries and continents, including spillover to the Gulf of Guinea states,” he warned.
